Research My Family Tree!

To research your family tree you always need to start with yourself, your siblings, your parents, and so on. Organization is helpful from the start by using the proper templates which can also be found in this site.

It is important to include this information for each individual in your family tree....

*First, Middle, and Last name

*Birthdate

*Birthplace

*Death Date

*Place of Death (city, state, country)

*Marriage Date

*Marriage Place

*And everything else that may make your search easier like military, baptism, land grants, newspaper clipping and obituaries.

OK, you are at a point where it is all upon your findings...Lets say for example, your grandfather "John Jackson" was born in 1926 in Mississippi and died in 1955 in Florida, but you don't know anymore information on him, what to do?

The best first step in these scenarios are always to check the census records. The US census started in 1790 and took place every 10 years until 1930. (Nearly every country has a form of census, with the exception of what was lost in wars.) In this case, I would search for "John Jackson" in a 1930 census in Mississippi.

In almost all circumstances. you will find him through the census, he would have been 4 years old, and would show who he was living with at that time. Most likely, father, mother and siblings and the census shows where each was born and when they were born.

This is a very simple way to find ancestors between 1790-1930.

If you are looking for information on someone who passed away somewhat recently, there are websites that specialize in obituaries.

You can also try to type in the name of the person you are searching right in google, then try it including a birth date. You will be surprised, especially when you get to ancestors born between 1600-1900, there have been others who have researched the same person. Or go through a surname search which specializes in a particular surname even giving the meanings and where the name derived.

This is how you find many 3rd, 4th, and 5th cousins. This is why it is good to enter your family tree online, preferably where many others have done theirs.
