This surname is of 2 possible origins.
The first, is derived from the
Middle High German word,
meaning dim, naive, simpleton. The name was
probably initially bestowed as a nickname of someone who was thought to be a
fool, or in an ironic way intelligent.
The second possible origin is the name may be derived from "Lauba", the
name of a town near Saarbrucken, Rhineland.
Spelling Variations are Lappe, Lape, Labbe, Lap
The name was first found in Swabia, where it is thought to have emerged.

Our particular Lapp Lineage starting with John Lapp 1786 is almost surely
of German descent. John's probably Grandfather was Rudolph Lapp came to America
in 1733 in Germany as a child. Rudolph was on a ship called the Pink Mary with a
Johannes Lapp, the connection isn't exactly known between these two.
In 1750, Rudolph had a son in Philadelphia, PA named Jeremiah Lapp who had
become a Loyalist that fought for the British in the Revolutionary War. When the
war was lost, the Loyalists were granted land in Ontario Canada area. This is
where we find our John Lapp with all of Jeremiah's children. Our John was born
in NY but was soon found in Ontario. Jeremiah was imprisoned and taken to NY
where he met his wife Amy Smith and would have had John.
