1st found in Kerry County, Ireland where they were
seated at Ballyheige. This is where they were granted land after the
Norman invasion in 1172. Some researchers have this back to 1066.
The Anglo-Norman Conquest of Ireland brought the system of
surnames into tradition. These surnames were very common in England and were
almost non-existent in Ireland before the conquest. The earliest of these
surnames appeared in Normandy, but as the Normans moved they created names of
where they lived. Some settlers eventually took the names of Irish places.
Originally these names were prefixed by "De", meaning "from" in French.
The Cantlon family were first found in "Cauntelo", in
Northern France. Early records record the surname Cantlon as de Cantelupo,
the Latin meaning of the Norman name de Cauntelo.
Before the migration to Ireland, the Cantlons were in England
a long while. The shrine of St. Thomas de Cantelupe, who was the last
English Saint canonized prior to the Reformation, is in Hereford Cathedral.
